“We Call BS” and “Speech at March for Our Lives” – X González
Delivered: February 18, 2018 & March 24, 2018
Context
On February 14, 2018, 17 people lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, when a former student entered the school armed with a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire. It was one of the most deadly mass shootings of the far too many shootings that have occurred in U.S. Schools.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage and reignited the debate on gun control laws, school safety measures, and mental health support. Survivors of the shooting became vocal advocates for stricter gun control, leading the March for Our Lives movement to push for legislative changes to prevent similar tragedies.
Watch two speeches by X González (born Emma) one of those advocates. The first, “We Call BS” was delivered three days after the shooting. The second was delivered as part of a rally at the March for Our Lives in Washington, DC, several weeks later.
Consider how X González uses persuasive techniques in each speech. How do they set up an argument? What is their proposition?
