The speeches of Pericles and Lincoln are similar in many ways. One that stood out to me was that they both honor the dead. They also both encourage those who remained to carry on the deceased’s efforts – Lincoln emphasizes how important it is to make sure that the troops’ deaths were not in vain, while Pericles encourages the Athenians to maintain democracy. Each speaker captures the attention of their listeners by connecting the soldiers’ service to more widely held ideals, such as freedom for Lincoln and democracy for Pericles.
