Assignment: Informative Speech

Instructions:

You will deliver and post a 5-minute informative speech video based on the topic you submitted. Be sure that your topic is specific and your purpose is clear.

  • You may use your visual from the previous module if you wish (or another.)
    • Be careful to use a visual that enhances rather than detracts from the speech.
    • If you are using a visual, remember that for at least 75% of the speech we should see YOU deliver the content, not a voice-over.
  • Please include a written bibliography for your speech, which should have 3 or more good sources that you drew from in your speech.
    • Pay attention to what this module says about sources and good oral and written citations before you record your speech.
  • Please include the assignment and group you are in for the categories when you post your video.
    • Submit your video by the end of this module so that you can receive feedback from your classmates.

Be Sure to Inform (and not persuade)

Remember, the primary aim of an informative speech is to provide the audience with valuable, accurate, and engaging information that deepens their understanding of your chosen topic. Ensure that you are presenting information in an unbiased, non-persuasive manner. An informative speech should not attempt to convince or persuade the audience to take a specific action or adopt a particular viewpoint.

  • While your speech might aim to raise awareness about a subject, an informative speech differs from a persuasive speech. Pay attention to the line between speaking to inform and speaking to persuade.
  • Explain complex or unfamiliar concepts clearly and understandably, breaking down information into digestible segments.
  • Aid the audience in comprehending the topic, making it more accessible and relatable. Use examples and analogies to make the content relatable.
  • Capture the audience’s attention and maintain their interest throughout the speech, making the topic engaging and relevant to their lives.
  • Offer the audience key takeaways or insights that they can apply or reflect on in their own lives or decision-making.
  • Structure the speech logically and coherently, with a clear introduction, main points, and conclusion, allowing the audience to follow and retain the information.
  • Uphold ethical standards in presenting information, citing sources, and respecting intellectual property rights. There is more on this in the next pages of this module.
