In her statement at the March for Our Lives, Emma Gonzalez advocated for gun control by using a combination of quiet and emotional appeal. X González uses several persuasive techniques in her speeches. She uses pathos, appealing to the audience’s emotions, by naming each of her friends who were killed and describing what they would never be able to do again. She also uses logos, appealing to logic, to argue that gun laws need to be changed. She points out that it is easier to buy a gun in Florida than to make plans with friends. She also uses statistics about mass shootings in other countries to support her claim that gun control can be effective.

X González’s speeches are impactful due to the fact that they really mix up, ethos, pathos, and logos to support gun control. The fact that they are survivor status gives them a lot of credibility (ethos), meaning that they have the problem telling what it is like. Pathos is visible in their emotionally charged storytelling, such as naming victims and talking about the terrible losses. On top of that, González uses logos by means of statistics and logical comparisons, such as the fact that buying guns in Florida is easier than doing other activities. Their appeal to both the emotions and the logic is what makes their message so convincing and persuasive.

X González delivered very powerful speeches that I felt were extremely important. I found that bringing up the names was very effective, and the silence felt very long, which was also an effective part of the speech. I also thought that the point regarding the Second Amendment and how guns have developed since then was a really good point. Comparing countries and laws was also very effective, and it was a good point to make. I really enjoyed listening to these speeches for the first time, and hearing the passion in their voice helps deliver the message.

The persuasive technique X González used was Proposition of Policy. The most effective was taking a moment of silence of how long the shooter was inside their school. The most striking was providing facts/evidence of the unjust that was being done. Ex: How much money the NRA donates, what certain polticians say, what neighbors said about the shooter.

X Gonzales uses ethos by telling the audience her friends who were from her school show how close she was to them and these names further prove why she cares about these individuals so much. Her organization is used with the proposition of policy that provides the problem and then uses pieces of evidence of that solution. Such as the gun shootings are a big problem however they can be solved using other countries such as Japan, Canda, and Europe are examples which have handled gun control with fewer deaths compared to America. This contributes to her argument for handling gun control and goes straight to more changes such as giving examples that show that the president has to change and its policies.
