Giving Peer Feedback
Please respond to each other’s Informative Speeches this week. Watching each other’s work and giving positive and constructive feedback is an important step in learning how to improve your own speech-making.
Feedback to your peers should always be given with a spirit of generosity. Everyone is here to learn and improve. Approach each other with kindness and try to offer specific and actionable ideas. For example, instead of just “I liked it,” continue the sentence, “I liked it when you asked the question and paused for a second because it made me think for a minute about what I already knew about this topic.” Or, “I noticed that you sometimes struggle with eye contact and looking down. When I am taping a video with my phone, I do too. I read somewhere (maybe give the link!) that sticking a post-it or something near the camera lens can help you with your focus.”
Be thoughtful and encouraging! This is an opportunity to highlight specific areas for growth and those that have improved.
As you respond, you may consider offering supportive and/or constructive feedback in the following areas:
Clarity and Organization:
- How well has the speaker organized their information? Is there a clear introduction, body, and conclusion?
- Are the main points logically arranged?
- How smoothly does the speaker transition between ideas?
- How is the speaker managing the time spent on each one in relation to the overall speech length?
Content:
- Evaluate the accuracy and relevance of the information presented to the best of your ability and based on the speech.
- Does it seem like there was a depth of research?
- What kind of supporting evidence and examples were included?
Delivery:
- Comment on the speaker’s vocal variety, pitch, and rate. Is the speech engaging and easy to follow?
- Is there enthusiasm and energy in their delivery?
- Observe nonverbal cues such as body language, eye contact, and gestures. Are they confident and appropriate for the topic?
Visual Aids:
- If applicable, assess the effectiveness of any visual aids used. Do they enhance understanding and engagement?
Remember, the goal of feedback is to support your peers in becoming more effective communicators. You are responding as outlined on the main module page, but I encourage you to engage with more of your classmates throughout.

Persuasive Speech Topic
Your next big speech is a Persuasive Speech. As with the informative speech, you are limited to 5 minutes. You’ve started learning some skills and considerations needed to convince people. In this and the upcoming module you will look at structuring solid arguments to strengthen your speech. Please let me know what topic(s) you are considering at this early stage. I encourage you to think about being specific and keep a narrow focus.
